Nestled in the eastern foothills of the Pennines, Sheffield is a vibrant city in South Yorkshire, England. It has transformed from a 19th century Steel City to a city so green that it has the highest number of trees to people ratio than any other city in Europe. It is home to two universities (The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University) and has a diverse and friendly population. The first thing I noticed about Sheffield was the number of trees and slopes. I took a taxi from the railway station to the hotel and that seven-minute ride was a constant struggle to keep my suitcases (and myself) from rolling back and forth. Unlike the taxis in India, these have a large space in front of the passenger seat and I was not prepared for that. In hindsight, it was really funny and the driver was polite enough to not laugh at me. Walking around the city over the following four days really gave me a sense of how green and beautiful the place is. The local government has worked hard to get rid of the dull, grey structures you would expect to see in a town with strong industrial roots. Sheffield is not simply beautiful, it is beautiful and interesting. The city centre exhibits many intriguing structures that honour the steel industry. Their unique shapes are modern architectural marvels. The Peace Gardens and the Town Hall add a stunning historical touch to the city centre. In such a metropolitan area, you are bound to find a variety of places to eat and shop at. London Road and Ecclesall Road are the go-to places for foodies. You'll find British pubs, chain restaurants and unique, authentic international cuisine! These are the three restaurants I visited and the food was absolutely delicious! 1) The Bhaji Shop: don't just take my word for it, read a review here. 2) Rama's Bridge: visit their website. 3) Amigos Mexican Kitchen: take a look. Sheffield is no stranger to shopping. In the city centre, there is the open-air and pedestrianised Orchard Shopping Centre which houses a variety of high-street fashion and lifestyle stores. For some budget shopping, head to The Moor street where you will find the Moor Market along with famous stores like Primark, Debenhams, Boots and Superdrug. Apart from these, you will find chain supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi and M&S scattered in and around the city centre. If you're looking for more options or fancy a proper shopping spree, you can simply hop on the Supertram to Meadowhall Shopping Centre- one of the largest in the UK! Apart from the Supertram, there are various ways through which you can access and explore the city. Doncaster Sheffield (Robin Hood) Airport is the nearest international airport and is less than 40 minutes away from the city. The Sheffield railway station is in close proximity to the city centre and is well connected to other British cities with train services by different providers. The same applies to visiting Sheffield by coach. Water transport is also available on the River Don so you can reach the city by canal! Sheffield is also easily accessible by road as it is linked into the national motorway network via the M1 and M18 motorways. As far as exploring the city is concerned, I always maintain that the best way to do so is on foot or by cycle. This definitely works for Sheffield as it has some beautiful parks to stroll through. The best part about my visit to this northern city was the chance to visit the Peak District. Before I can share my experiences, here's a sneak peak: Scattered throughout the incredible expanse of the national park, you will find small wonders- an alpaca farm, a Harry Potter-esque bridge, a hidden reservoir and friendly pubs and inns. Also, don't be surprised if a stranger greets you while you are out walking in the Peak District- it's a local custom! What's your favourite part of the Peak District? Comment below and let me know! What do you love about Sheffield? Comment below!
P.S. A special thank you to Martin and Tina Timms for making my visit to Sheffield an extremely memorable and enjoyable experience.

Informative and interesting post! How did you get to the Peak District from the city centre? Seems that public transport takes two hours according to Google maps. All the best for your travels!

Thank you! I'm glad you found the post interesting. I'm lucky to have family in Sheffield so we went by car and it took us around 20 minutes. I suppose it depends on where in the Peak District you'd like to go. You can hire a bike in Sheffield for around 7 GBP for the day and go riding in the peak district. http://russellsbicycleshed.co.uk/cycle-hire You can also find other options at http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/publictransport/peakconnections Hope this helps! :)

Hi there! Just an update now that I've actually lived in Sheffield for a few months... you can hop onto one of the local buses (number 65 or 271) to get to Fox House which is in the Peak District and conveniently located near Longshaw Estate which has beautiful walking routes. The buses go further in the Peaks to places like Castleton so it is really quite easy to travel there and it will take less than an hour. :)
