In the East Midlands of England, in the county of Leicestershire is the culturally diverse city of Leicester. With a rich history dating back to 47 AD marking the arrival of the Romans, a famous landmark in the city is the King Richard III Visitor Centre after his recent reburial in 2015. This city is also a major educational hub that boasts two universities: The University of Leicester and De Montford University. It is also home to the National Space Centre which is definitely worth a visit. I’d suggest you spend at least two hours exploring the centre which is packed with games, animations, short movies and even rides! It’s a fun-filled way to learn about our universe that nobody is ever too old for. See if you’re fit to be an astronaut, hop onto a ride, recall the first mission to the Moon and more! Check out their website to plan your visit. A ten minute ride north of the city will bring you to the expanse of Bradgate Park. If you want to do any of the following, this is the place to go: 1. Go for a run 2. A breath of fresh air 3. Explore some ruins 4. See deer and peacocks 5. Click Instagram-worthy pictures 6. Take a picnic 7. Enjoy a hot drink and some crepes surrounded by peaceful and picturesque landscape! I was lucky to go there for a lovely morning walk. Although it was winter, the sun was bright and high up in the clear blue sky. I got to see some deer and doe and even a peacock! The hike up the hill to Old John’s Tower was refreshing and the view from the top was stunning. It’s very easy to get around the city and the surrounding area. Leicester has a very user-friendly travel website that helps you plan your journey. Take a look! However, the city centre is compact and best explored on foot. Leicester market has all the bits and bobs you need. This 800-year old market is the largest outdoor covered market in Europe! It has over 270 stalls ranging from fashion to fruits and vegetables. I would personally recommend the candy shop in the market: Brennan’s Candy Cabin. He has got a very large variety of sweets of all sorts from famous brands like Lindt to more local ones. The prices are low and he’s more than happy to help you pick and allows you to make a mixed bag of any sweets you like. If you’re looking to take home sweets, you should definitely go here. Check out his shop here! As an Indian, I felt quite at home in this cosmopolitan city. There is a good mix of people from various cultures and backgrounds. Everyone is quite friendly and welcoming. It was lovely visiting the Sai Baba temple in the city centre. For a more Indian atmosphere and shopping, you can head up to Belgrave Road. Here’s a glimpse! What do you love about Leicester? P.S. A special thank you to the Timms family for making my stay in Leicester homey and pleasant.
